Casual French

I wanted to do a casual, alcohol-free dinner tonight, and decided to give Pastis a try.  I've heard that the simple fare is popular with many diners, especially froggies looking for a taste of home.  This seemed to be just what I was looking for.

I started with rillettes de canard, which came in a glass jar along with a few slices of bread.  Not bad at all... lots of ducky flavor with - what else? - duck fat!  One of my favorite things to order.  Very satisfying.

I also shared some of the pissaladière, which is something new to me.  It's basically a white pizza without cheese, with a layer of caramelized onions, anchovies and black olives.  Amy called it "onion soup on toast", which is a pretty accurate description.

I wasn't in the mood for a big meal, and for some reason none of the main course selections from the small menu appealed tonight, so I picked up the assortiment de cochonnailles.  I love charcuterie, and love picking up the different pieces of yummy pork with my fingers and munching.  Very happy.

I was pretty full by now, as I've taken in a lot of bread thanks to the rillettes and the pissaladière.  I shelved plans to duck in to Tapeo for a quick churros fix.  I'll do that another day...
