Diary of a Quarantined Boy part 2, day 2
It's day 2 of our quarantine, and I'm working from the hotel. Breakfast got delivered not long after 8 p.m.
Boiled eggs ∙ pork banger sausages ∙ baked beans ∙ curry samosas ∙ hash brown ∙ bread roll ∙ sliced fresh fruit - nice to get a little kick from the spice in the samosa. The Hami melon (哈密瓜) was nice and crunchy, and very sweet.
For our morning coffee we knew our options would be limited while stuck in the hotel room. It costs extra to rent a Nespresso machine, and I'm not sure we would get the capsules we want. So we picked up "hanging ear drip filters" during our time in Taiwan - from hotels we were staying in and also a couple of coffee specialists. It's unfortunate that we would be generating a little more waste, but someone needs her morning coffee...
Yirgacheffe from Cama Café. No surprises here... tasted and smelled like Yirgacheffe.
Lunch gets delivered not long after 12 p.m. Pretty regular.
Tofu in loh-sui sauce ∙ sweet and sour pork ∙ sautéed choi sum ∙ steamed rice ∙ carrot, radish soup with pork and sweet corn ∙ Vita Cold Brew No Sugar Dong Ding Oolong Tea Drink (鹵水豆腐 ∙ 菠蘿咕嚕肉 ∙ 清炒菜心 ∙ 絲苗白飯 ∙ 粟米青紅蘿蔔老火湯 ∙ 維他冷泡無糖茶凍頂烏龍) - the tofu seemed a little firm to me, and I made sure to gave it enough time to soak up the sauce. Sweet and sour pork was pretty tasty. The double-boiled soup tasted pretty sweet thanks to the corn and carrots.
Our friend Film Buff came to drop off some wine for us. FOUR BOTTLES! I was flabbergasted by his generosity. Now I know I would make it to the end of this guarantine period without being murdered.
Afternoon snack today were original palmiers (原味蝴蝶酥) from Imperial Patisserie (皇玥). Not bad.
I also had the seaweed cookies (海苔煎餅) from I-Mei (義美), a childhood favorite from Taiwan.
I'm getting used to dinner being delivered shortly after 6 p.m., which is earlier than I usually take my dinner.
Braised pork belly with lotus root ∙ roasted duck ∙ sautéed Chinese kale with ginger ∙ steamed rice ∙ red bean sweetened soup ∙ HealthWorks sugarcane, rhizoma imperatae and sea coconut drink (蓮藕炆五層腩 ∙ 明爐燒鴨 ∙ 薑米粒炒芥蘭 ∙ 絲苗白飯 ∙ 陳皮紅豆沙 ∙ 健康工房竹蔗茅根海底椰飲料) - the skin of the roast duck was very fragrant, while the meat could be more moist... but this is quarantine so I'll take it. The pork belly with red fermented beancurd (南乳) was really tasty. The red bean soup was actually relatively diluted and therefore not too sweet, but still delivered the fragrance from dried tangerine peel (果皮).
I decided to open one of the bottles that Film Buff left us, which turned out to be somewhat of a bongwater as well.
2018 Jean-Pierre Guyon Bourgogne - a little metallic and mineral. Definitely has that bongwater bent. Fizzy and lively, and actually saw bubbles at the rim on the surface.
The hotel provided us with some snacks, which included these Ritz Crackers Cheese Sandwiches. Perfect to go along with some wine.
The wine tonight was an improvement over the one from last night, but Sankala was still not quite happy. I guess I'll die another day.
Good luck with your quarantine. My wife and daughter went through it a month ago when returning to HK for the first time since Dec. 2019... They were brought a small suitcase with microwave and tiny strove from inlaws on arrival and as of day 2 goodies in form of dim sum, BBQd pork, egg waffles, wine etc. Hopefully your hotel is near to some traiteur or good takeaway with quick delivery service.
