Bistro outing on a stormy night

The F and B industry is going through some tough times these days, so Foursheets and I have decided to go and support a few smaller operators in their efforts. It has been quite some time since we were last at Jean May and we've kinda been in the mood for this type of place lately, so a few days ago I made a booking for dinner tonight.

The weather in Hong Kong has been pretty bad the last few days, and there were heavy rain tonight with the Red Rainstorm Warning being issued. Well... we didn't want to ditch the restaurant as the point was to support the industry, so we kept our appointment.

I added an extra course when I thought we didn't order enough, but in the end I thought it was just a little bit over the ideal amount of intake.

Shimeiji frits, Parmesan - these were pretty good, with the shaved cheese topping adding a little more flavor to the shimeji (しめじ) mushrooms.

Chicken liver parfait, red onion compote - this was pretty tasty, but the parfait tasted less sweet and more fatty.

Stuffed baby artichokes - this was really good. Stuffed with minced pork, carrots, onions, mushrooms, and lardons. Foursheets liked this a lot.

Poached baby chicken, spring veg - a very "homey" dish where the chicken was tender and came with a simple assortment of peas, carrots, potatoes, and cherry tomatoes. Nothing complicated, just honest food.

Hand-cut squid ink mafaldine, mussels, squid, chili - this was pretty interesting, as the pasta had bite and the chili added a little heat.

I grabbed a simple bottle of red Burg from home for our meal:

2010 Hospices de Beaune Beaune 1er Cru Cuvée Rousseau-Deslandes, mis en bouteille par Lucien Le Moine pour MNSC - popped and poured. The nose was as big and toasty as it ever was, with notes of leather and black cherries.

Munching Dentist walked in towards the end of our dinner, which was quite a coincidence, but it's no surprise that this place has many fans who are wine lovers, too.
